PREVIEW | Widnes v Nantwich Town

PREVIEW | Widnes v Nantwich Town

Callum Chadwick18 Apr - 19:38

All you need to know ahead of Widnes' penultimate home game of the campaign

Widnes can make an immediate return to the top of the Northern Premier League West table with victory over Nantwich Town on Saturday.

The Whites were replaced at the summit by Hednesford Town on Good Friday by virtue of their 2-0 win over Mossley, moving into pole position on goal difference albeit having played a game more.

It's the first time the complexion of the league table has changed from Widnes' point-of-view since mid-November and Michael Ellison's side know what's required if they are to regain their three-point advantage with just two matches thereafter left to play.

They've endured their worst run of the season at the business end of the campaign. The Whites have won just one of their last five outings and are winless in their last three, surrendering one-goal leads in trips to both Newcastle Town and Mossley.

But yet, Widnes's fate is still in their own hands and maximum points over the Easter Weekend double-header would put Ellison's team on the brink of a first-ever promotion to Step 3.

The Opposition

Opponents Nantwich started 2025 in contention for a play-off spot but a run of just four wins in 17 matches has consigned Jon Moran's side to a mid-table finish.

But The Dabbers will arrive in Cheshire on a high after a 6-0 victory over Hanley Town last time out - a scoreline racked up in the first half alone.

Town put eight past tenants City of Liverpool at the DCBL Stadium back in February and are capable of putting any team to the sword, particularly with Callum Saunders and Kai Evans re-discovering their goalscoring form in recent weeks.

Previous Meetings

These two sides played out a 2-2 draw in September's reverse fixture, with Widnes fighting back from two goals down to earn a point.

Nantwich triumphed at the DCBL Stadium on the final day of last season and will be eager to record maximum points for a second successive April visit to WA8.

Widnes edge the head-to-head record, though, with two wins to Nantwich's one including a 6-5 Integro League Cup win in late 2019.
