All you need to know as Widnes host Stalybridge

It’s second against fourth at the DCBL Stadium as Widnes entertain Stalybridge Celtic (7:45pm kick-off).

The Whites will be aiming to continue their unbeaten start to the campaign on Lowerhouse Lane but standing in their way is a Celtic side who know victory can lift them above Widnes into second come 10pm this evening.

Widnes needed an 85th minute Dominic McGiveron penalty to salvage a point at home to Avro on Saturday and Michael Ellison’s team know that a better performance is required to secure three points here.

And doing so would lift the Whites back to the top of the NPL West on goal difference to Vauxhall Motors.

The Opposition

Visitors Stalybridge will be smarting after Saturday’s 2-1 loss at Newcastle Town.

Manager James Kinsey will be eager for a response but his side will be in confident mood having already won at the DCBL Stadium this season – a 2-1 win over City of Liverpool in September.

Perhaps there will be an added edge to proceedings too after Widnes dumped Stalybridge out of the FA Cup at Bower Fold back in August, winning 1-0 thanks to a Sharif Deans winner.

Former Widnes winger Jack Banister, who enjoyed three spells with the Whites across 2017-2020, is likely to feature heavily for Celtic.
