Widnes host neighbours Warrington Town in their final pre-season friendly at the Halton Stadium ahead of the 2019/20 Northern Premier League Division One North West season.
The local derby should provide another stern test for Steve Akrigg and Kev Towey’s side, who ran out 1-0 winners at Runcorn Town last time out on Tuesday night.
The Whites are once again expected to field a smaller squad of around 17 players as co-bosses look to step up the intensity with the new league campaign drawing ever closer.
Tuesday’s win at Runcorn was Widnes’ first of pre-season at the fourth attempt, with Conor Ready striking 11 minutes from time to seal victory.
Ready was one of a number of players to record 90-minute outings at the Viridor Community Stadium, with rotation expected for the visit of Warrington.
Defender Jake Phillips could miss out however after limping out of the win over Runcorn with injury, while Sean Myler is also a doubt with a knock that ruled him out of Tuesday’s friendly.
Opponents Warrington will be looking to go one better in the league this season, after agonisingly missed out on promotion to the National League North despite beating South Shields to win the NPL Premier Division play-off final.
Paul Carden’s men were beaten by King’s Lynn in a super play-off to seal promotion to the National League’s second-tier, and the Yellows have been tipped by many to challenge for the title this time around.
Tonight marks Town’s fourth pre-season run out, having played out a goalless draw against Accrington Stanley on Monday night – a result that followed two successive 7-0 wins away at Skelmersdale United and Wythenshawe Town.
Forwards Connor McCarthy and Jack Dunn are familiar faces who may feature for Warrington. McCarthy made a handful of Widnes appearances under Steve Hill from 2013-2015, while Dunn scored twice in a White shirt during a one-month loan spell last season.
They aren’t the only players who could face their former club, however. Widnes duo Michael Grogan and Danny Ventre both list Warrington amongst their former clubs, with the latter being named the club’s Player of the Year in 2016 as the Yellows won the then NPL Division One North.
